sugar scales

a study in irony

Sugar scales explores turning the everyday, inexpensive material of candy  into interesting and unique forms.  By elevating the medium in a way that has been rather unexplored to create fish that cannot survive within water, I explored techniques to allow me to work with candy as you would with resin or glass. This involved mold making, hand-pulling candy to make organic forms and the study of candy making processes. Due the the fragile nature of hard candy, the creation of the fish was often spontaneous and exploratory and resulted in strange, delicate creatures. No two fish are the same despite belonging to the same school and are edible.

Medium: Candy

Processes: Silicon mold-making  & hard candy techniques: hand pulling, assembly, molds

triple goddess moon

an abstract representation of the mythology of the moon.

A version of triple goddess or the triple hare myth appears in all inhabited continents across the globe and tells the story of the phases of the moon as representations of fertility and life-cycle: the child, the mother, and the crone. This abstraction depicts the movement and phases of the moon in through sweeping organic curves and carved forms, intended to mimic the faces and creatures that early cultures saw on the moons surface. This project is part of the Carnegie Mellon Moon Arts project and will be traveling to the moon. Learn more about the Moon Arts project .

Materials: Cherry wood

Processes: Solid works rendering, CNC routers & hand sanding
